Upper Panels
The upper panels pay homage to Davao’s spiritual heritage and natural beauty. The gold and silver inverted crossed keys, set against a serene light blue background, honor St. Peter, the patron saint of the Davao Church (now the Cathedral), while also symbolizing Our Lady, Patroness of the Philippines and of Ateneo de Davao University, under the title of Assumption of Our Lady. The vibrant green mountain peaks represent the majestic Mt. Apo and the surrounding landscapes that grace the horizon of Davao City.

Lower Panels
In the lower panels, we find the family arms of the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius de Loyola of the House Oñaz y Loyola. The seven bold red stripes against a backdrop of regal gold symbolize the courage and sacrifice of the seven sons of the House of Oñaz, who valiantly fought for the liberties of Christians in Spain. Additionally, the depiction of wolves and a pot (lobos y olla) cleverly incorporates wordplay on the family name Loyola, adding a touch of wit and tradition to the seal.

Crest
At the pinnacle of the seal rests a silver medallion bearing the monogram of the Society of Jesus. The letters “IHS,” derived from the Greek spelling of “Jesus,” are flanked by the cross and nails, powerful symbols of Christ’s sacrifice and redemption.

Motto
Emblazoned above the shield, the Latin motto “Fortes in Fide” (Strong in Faith) serves as a guiding light for the Ateneo de Davao University community, echoing the words of 1 Peter 5:9 and St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (5:10-20). It encapsulates our deep rootedness in our faith that defines our institution and its members.
