Goal 5. AdDU assisted in the protection of the natural and human environment; and in the promotion of renewable energy and appropriate technology.

Our Commitments

Key Performance Indicators

  • Initiated and involved in the crafting of 3 significant policy measures protecting the environment in Davao City, including 1 promoting renewable energy and appropriate technology
  • 25 barangay disaster risk assessments and management plans in Davao Region; half of these barangays in Davao City
  • 50% of AdDU energy requirement fueled by renewable energy

Strategic Actions:

A 5.1    Institutionalize a University-wide Ecoteneo Office that leads in the development of an environmentally-responsible culture and implementation of a University environmental management plan with proper coordination among different units in the University. Such environmental management plan would include: strengthening the dissemination of the University emergency protocols and expanding it to the local occupational health and safety committee; and ensuring that 50% of the energy requirement of the University would come from renewable energy.

5.2    Establish an Institute for Urban Planning that would promote ecologically sound city and regional planning, environmental sustainability, renewable energy and appropriate technology and help preserve the rural-urban character of Davao City. Strengthen University centers that promote environmental sustainability and deal with climate change and its impacts, including TroPICS, CREATE and AMC.

5.3    Maximize information and communication technology in increasing the awareness and motivation for action for environmental protection.

F 5.4    Develop environmental stewardship formation programs rooted in reconciliation with creation that encourage environmentally-responsible lifestyles.   This includes formation programs that deliberately promote ways of understanding and addressing climate change and an appreciation for renewable energy and appropriate technology.
I 5.5    Integrate modules on environmental protection, climate change, disaster risk adaptation and preparedness, and need for renewable energy and appropriate technology in curricula. Immerse students in real-world environment issues and empower them to apply knowledge to develop solutions to environmental issues. This also includes involving students in policy advocacy that is responsive to environmental issues in and out of Mindanao. Deploy students in practicum courses in key government environmental offices and encourage graduates to serve in the same institutions.

5.6    Offer BS in Environmental and Urban Planning. Establish the Environmental Science program as a separate department.

R 5.7    Pursue scientific, inter-disciplinal and collaborative research that strengthens policy advocacy for environmental protection. This includes research that improves community resilience in the face of disasters, and research on renewable energy and appropriate technology. Deploy graduate school research that would provide vital inputs to environmentally sustainable development planning in Davao Region particularly Davao City.
E 5.8    Advocate environmental protection, sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness, and renewable energy and appropriate technology through engaging in policy reforms, educational campaigns, constituency building, networking and linkaging, and creating spaces of dialogues.

5.9    Pursue community-based projects or partnerships on sustainable agriculture, environmentally-responsible enterprises, forest management, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, and renewable energy and appropriate technology. This includes assisting communities in disaster risk assessment and management planning.

5.10 Establish strong linkages with barangay local government units and other mandated agencies in educating communities on the science of climate change, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
